No Huddle

So, with the National Football Team kicking off its regular season this past weekend and college programs in full swing, I got to thinking about the Lakers’ pigskin legacy.

Oswego State fielded a football team for several decades until the program was punted in 1976.

Let's play two.

As best we can tell, Oswego State fielded a football team on and off from the mid-1920s until 1976, when the program was punted.

I’m guessing members of our 35th Reunion group — the classes of 1974, ’75 and ’76 — and earlier graduates might have some fond gridiron memories to share when they visit campus for Reunion next summer.

There’s no formal explanation in the Oswego athletic annals for the football program’s demise. The team did have a dismal record of 2-5 in its final season, including some losses to junior varsity squads, according to athletic department records.

But, check out these yearbook photos from the mid-70s. They might not have been Top 25 material, but they sure drew a crowd …

Speaking of crowds, we’re expecting a big one for the first-ever football mini-reunion in June. Help bring our backs back to campus by volunteering to help plan exclusive events.

Oh, and keep an eye on the Reunion Weekend Web HQ or follow us on Twitter for all the latest Reunion updates.

Shane – this stuff is great! I always wondered about the demise of the football program and how it did fair when it was in full swing. I would love to learn more if there were a place to do so.

Same here, Dan. We actually had someone respond to this with some background on the program’s disappearance. Expect more on this down the road. Thanks for reading!

I was also curious why it disappeared after i graduated. I moved to California and saw a few scores in the paper and then it was gone.
